Door County Plein Air Festival

Door County Plein Air Festival

July 24th – 30th

Fish Creek, WI

I am looking forward to another great year at the Door County Plein Air Festival at the Peninsula School of Art.  This is a big event in an amazingly beautiful and historic area.  Every town on this Lake Michigan peninsula is a jewel with shake shingle homes, American architecture, massive historic barns, harbors and quaint small town life.  At times it feels like the north east coast of America.  There is never a shortage of inspiration for painting.  The event itself is one the best organized in the country, with opportunities for the community and collectors to interact with the artists.  Of course, the staff are some of my favorite people in the world with enthusiasm and love for the arts.  A must see event is the lively ‘quick paint’ competition and auction on July 30th from 9-11am.  The opening reception for the exhibition will be the same day from 6-8pm.  It is well worth a visit to Wisconsin to enjoy this event.  You can find more information about the event at

Maynard Dixon Camp Out Invitational

Maynard Dixon Camp Out Invitational

June 20th – 25th  •  Mt. Carmel, UT

Honored to be invited by the Thunderbird Foundation to the Maynard Dixon Camp Out invitational in southern UT.  The Dixon Camp Out is much more than just an art show. In fact, it’s not really an art “show” at all. This event is a gathering of artists, collectors, community, and friends who love art.

The guiding principles of the event are two fold: we want to help artists in America and we want to ensure the viability of historic preservation.  We are deeply connected to the art of Maynard Dixon and his contributions to American art.  But rather than focusing solely on the beloved paintings of Maynard Dixon, we focus on the ‘art spirit’ and intention of Maynard Dixon, the artist, poet, and whole person.  In choosing to remember Dixon this way, we believe his legacy becomes even more meaningful when it is illuminated by the artists who are living and making art in 2016.

The camp out is also one of two fundraising events to support the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts.  In bringing serious collectors to this event, we help the artists on the forefront of American art continue to thrive, and we fulfill our mission for historic preservation.  All art sales from Dixon Camp Out and Maynard Dixon Country directly fund the artists as well as the annual operating budget of the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts and the Maynard Dixon Living History Museum.

The event includes a ‘wet paint’ exhibit on June 25th.  The artists will paint through out the entire week and then exhibit the plein air works for sale.  There are also workshops and daily seminars and discussion panels.  It is a great opportunity to be immersed in the arts.

Interpreting the Landscape – Plein Air

June 4th & 5th, 2016
on
Sauvie Island, in Portland, Oregon

This workshop will explore the specifics of learning to ‘see’ the landscape as an artist, by interpreting the visual elements, and then executing it all onto canvas. We will discuss the way the optics of the eye work as well as seeing light, form, atmosphere and space. The fundamental principles of painting – composition, drawing, value, color, and edges will be stressed as well as building a strong design from the elements of nature. Students will sharpen their focus by pushing for simplification of form, shape, and the larger masses. Each day we will begin with a demo covering the principles mentioned above followed by a fun day of individual instruction for each student as they work in the afternoon. This workshop is for all skill levels and in any medium of choice. Individual attention will be a high priority as well as laughs and a lot of enthusiasm!

• All skill levels welcome in Oil, Acrylic & Watercolor
• Access to private properties on Sauvie Island!
• Limit 15 students
• $250 for both days
