“See” & Paint Your Subject in Oils and Acrylics

 June 9th – 11th, 2017

Portland, OR at the Oregon Society of Artists

This will be a 3 day studio/plein air workshop where we will explore the specifics of learning to ‘see’ the subject, interpreting the visual elements, and putting it all onto canvas.  We will cover ‘seeing’ the light, form, atmosphere and space of a scene.  The fundamentals of painting–composition, drawing, value, color, and edges will also be stressed. Mitch will be doing plenty of demos in oils covering these concepts.  We will work in the studio from photos, field sketches, or still life subjects set up in class.  There also may be a demo/work outside near the OSA, gathering material through field sketches or painting en plein air.  Individual attention for all students will be a high priority, as well as laughs and a lot of enthusiasm!

Plein Air Painting the Grand Canyon

September 18th – 22rd, 2017

The Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

Is there any better place to plein air paint and explore the concepts of working outdoors than the Grand Canyon?  We will be painting from the spectacular South Rim for 5 days with special access to the park’s views!  This event too follows the week of the Celebration of Art Plein Air Event.  Another chance to come early and watch artist around the country paint the Canyon!

Door County Plein Air Festival

Door County Plein Air Festival

July 24th – 30th

Fish Creek, WI

I am looking forward to another great year at the Door County Plein Air Festival at the Peninsula School of Art.  This is a big event in an amazingly beautiful and historic area.  Every town on this Lake Michigan peninsula is a jewel with shake shingle homes, American architecture, massive historic barns, harbors and quaint small town life.  At times it feels like the north east coast of America.  There is never a shortage of inspiration for painting.  The event itself is one the best organized in the country, with opportunities for the community and collectors to interact with the artists.  Of course, the staff are some of my favorite people in the world with enthusiasm and love for the arts.  A must see event is the lively ‘quick paint’ competition and auction on July 30th from 9-11am.  The opening reception for the exhibition will be the same day from 6-8pm.  It is well worth a visit to Wisconsin to enjoy this event.  You can find more information about the event at

Maynard Dixon Camp Out Invitational

Maynard Dixon Camp Out Invitational

June 20th – 25th  •  Mt. Carmel, UT

Honored to be invited by the Thunderbird Foundation to the Maynard Dixon Camp Out invitational in southern UT.  The Dixon Camp Out is much more than just an art show. In fact, it’s not really an art “show” at all. This event is a gathering of artists, collectors, community, and friends who love art.

The guiding principles of the event are two fold: we want to help artists in America and we want to ensure the viability of historic preservation.  We are deeply connected to the art of Maynard Dixon and his contributions to American art.  But rather than focusing solely on the beloved paintings of Maynard Dixon, we focus on the ‘art spirit’ and intention of Maynard Dixon, the artist, poet, and whole person.  In choosing to remember Dixon this way, we believe his legacy becomes even more meaningful when it is illuminated by the artists who are living and making art in 2016.

The camp out is also one of two fundraising events to support the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts.  In bringing serious collectors to this event, we help the artists on the forefront of American art continue to thrive, and we fulfill our mission for historic preservation.  All art sales from Dixon Camp Out and Maynard Dixon Country directly fund the artists as well as the annual operating budget of the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts and the Maynard Dixon Living History Museum.

The event includes a ‘wet paint’ exhibit on June 25th.  The artists will paint through out the entire week and then exhibit the plein air works for sale.  There are also workshops and daily seminars and discussion panels.  It is a great opportunity to be immersed in the arts.
